Heading to Tenerife with a baby in tow?

Not every destination in the world is child-friendly; whether that’s because of the size of the place, how busy it is, or simply that there aren’t enough activities which are suitable. Whether your baby is literally a baby, or whether you have a toddler nipping at your heels, the great news is that there is a year around destination perfect for a break in the sunshine, no matter what the month.

Welcome to Tenerife, the largest of the beautiful Canary Islands.

The south of the island is the ideal winter sun destination, and during the summer months you can expect those iconic high temperatures we all expect from a beach destination. There are many resorts in this area, including Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, and the party fun town of Playa de las Americas. If you’re travelling with a little one then Playa de las Americas may be a tad bit too loud during the peak season, however during the winter months it is much less bustling; despite that, Los Cristianos offers a chilled-out, family-friendly destination no matter what the month.

The weather is a great plus point to Tenerife, because even though the mercury soars during the peak summer months of June to August, it is never too humid, and you can always cool off in the pool or sea, however the ideal time to travel with a baby is when it is a little cooler, and the months between October to March are ideal. Tenerife holidays are great for families, no matter which resort you choose, and whichever month you decide on.

So, if you need a few ideas of activities to enjoy with your little one, here’s a few suggestions.

The great outdoors

Tenerife overall is a volcanic island and because of that there are many walking trails through areas of natural beauty. You can even hire a bike and head off that way if you choose. The great thing about walking in Tenerife is that the trails are all marked with their difficulty level, time it takes, and how long they are, so you don’t have any surprises halfway through – this is ideal when you’re getting some fresh air with your child. If you have a toddler, many trails are generally safe enough to allow them to walk beside you, and the nature around them will certainly more than occupy their minds!

Enjoy the sea

Boat trips are plentiful and you can head off dolphin or whale spotting. These are safe, obviously provided you keep an eye on any toddlers who are liable to wander off, and Tenerife is a great place to enjoy the marine-life.

Beach time

Obviously the iconic activity to enjoy during a holiday is a day on the beach and you have plenty to choose from. Los Cristianos is probably the quietest beach area, especially during the off season months, and the main beach is a wonderful choice, with safe waters and golden sands. Alternatively, Fanabe Beach is a good choice as this has white sand, plenty of family-friendly facilities, and a grassed area at one end for little ones to run around and play.

Waterpark fun

Siam Park and Aqualand are two waterparks which are extremely family-friendly. Siam Park has many water attractions and is set in a peaceful garden area. This is located in Adeje. Alternatively, Aqualand has a very popular dolphin show for all ages, as well as many water-slides and facilities. This is located just between Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos.

A spot of wildlife

Loro Parque is perhaps the island’s most famous attraction and is packed with wildlife, including alligators, monkeys, flamingos, dolphins, and sea lions to name just a few. There are gardens to walk around for a spot of peace and quiet, and it’s never overly crowded during the quieter months.

Put simply, Tenerife is very family-friendly, no matter what age your children are.
