Family holidays are a rite of passage for not only children, but the adults involved as well. Why? Well, the memories made here stay with you for years to come. I can still remember my childhood holidays, mainly in a caravan on the east coast of England, building sandcastles and eating candyfloss – simpler days!

Whilst we agree that family holidays are fantastic ways to spend quality time together and see the world, it’s not always possible to throw money at a break, because that elusive money tree has not yet been found!

Luckily for us, there are plenty of ideas we can put into practice to allow that family holiday to happen, whilst also not breaking the bank in the process.

Camping in Cornwall

The Cornish coast in England is quite frankly amazing, and the rocky landscape and secluded coves, make for a great holiday backdrop. There are countless caravan holiday parks in Cornwall, and they’re pretty cheap too, which certainly ticks the budget box. Head to Land’s End and have your photo taken with the famous sign, jump on a bus to Tintagel and pretend you’re a knight of the Round Table, or visit Newquay and try your hand at surfing. During the summer months Cornwall is a true outdoor fan’s heaven.

Skiing in Bulgaria

We know that Bulgaria is a cheap country to visit, and for eating and drinking you probably won’t find anywhere cheaper. Did you know you can also choose Bulgaria as a cheap ski option? You have several resorts to choose from for your shoop-shooping needs during winter, including Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo, all offering ski tuition for kids and adults.

City break to Lisbon

Portugal is one of the cheaper European countries to visit, and when you turn that on its head and look at city breaks, Lisbon is a great choice for culture and excitement, without having to stretch the credit card too much. You can easily mix kid-friendly activities with more traditional city break options, including the Jardim Zoologico, which kids will love. Lisbon is a great choice for a city break on a budget.

Holiday camp in France

There are  some holiday companies that offer multiple choices for camping holidays with a slight difference. You get all the fun of a holiday resort, but you get a cheaper option for your accommodation, without really scrimping on luxury. France is a traditional area for these kinds of breaks, and you can cut the cost further by grabbing a cheap flight, or even driving yourself.

Last minute beach holiday to Benidorm

Kids will love the neon-lit, fun-filled Spanish resort of Benidorm, and if your family is a fan of the TV show, then even better! You’ll find endless options for cheap accommodation, and the beach is where all the fun is. Kids will love the chance to sit and soak up the sun, splashing in the sea, building good, old fashioned sandcastles, and you can kick back and relax. If you choose a hotel with a good pool, you can easily waste a few days here, without spending too much money on activities.

Adventure holiday in Scotland

Sailing, walking, mountain-biking, kayaking, you name it, you can do it in Scotland and there are countless companies who offer tailor-made adventure breaks in the Highlands and surrounding areas. A bit of adrenaline fun is great for tiring the kids out, whilst also getting active, grabbing some exercise, and filling those lungs full of fresh, mountain air.

These are just a few ideas on how you can easily grab a family holiday this year, without going over budget.
